Almost one million people have signed a petition asking the BBC to keep Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson on the programme. Yet many other petitions seem to garner little support.

Do petitions really achieve what they set out to do? What makes a successful petition and why would people support it?

Social commentator Mal Fletcher looked at the issue in an interview today with BBC radio’s John Foster.
