The Age Of Impermanence - US Media Gathering

09 August 2009

"We are living in an age of impermanence. Change is the constant background music of our lives."

These were the opening words of Mal Fletcher's address to The Gathering, a network meeting of Christian leaders from across the USA who are involved with media.

The event, held in southern California and sponsored by BMCFerrell, an advertising group, and Cottonwood Christian Centre, aimed to look at some of the challenges facing Christian media in the next few years.

Ben Ferrell, chairman of BMCFerrell, said: "We invited Mal because of his work as a futurist. We need help to see where media might be headed."

Mal's major session focused on the way changes in digital media are affecting people's attitudes and responses to leadership.

"The world's most influential leaders, those who are changing the game in the global context neither Luddites nor is as dangerous as." Said now." They are neither in love with the past nor simply involved in the present."

"Each one of them is a futurist -- they are heavily invested in engaging the future today."

"We can't be a voice for change until and unless we engage the cultural conversation."

"This time of radical change in both media and leadership through media, is our opportunity to get ahead of the curve and strategically plan for greater influence."

In the room were key church and network leaders who are investing heavily in creative new forms of media outreach. Some came from as far as Australia.

We will be able to offer video of this session online shortly.
