Historic Church Comes Alive

01 February 2006

A 600 year-old Anglican church in the English city of Norwich came alive recently with the sound of high-powered Christian worship and a potent message from Mal Fletcher

St. Peter Mancroft is the major church in the centre of Norwich and a well known landmark in the region.

The Awesome in the City event is a new outreach aimed especially at young people, in a city which is home to a large number of university students.

The event is the brainchild of Pastor Tom Rawls, the pastor of the Proclaimers Church which has been growing steadily over the past two years and is attracting an increasing number of young people.

Proclaimers Church worked closely with the leadership of the Anglican church to provide this all new approach to outreach.

The inaugural event, which drew 450 people, brought together the very modern with the very old: a vibrant spirit of (loud) praise, in a majestic old building erected in quieter times.

Mal Fletcher worked with the Awesome in the City team to help attract press coverage which, in the lead up to the event, was overwhelmingly positive and a great encouragement to the event team. Several newspapers covered the story, as did BBC Radio Norfolk.

Speaking after the event, Mal said: 'It's great to see churches as different in approach as Proclaimers and the Church of England working together on the one thing that really counts -- bringing the Jesus' message to a new audience.'

'This was truly an awesome event. And it's just the beginning for this great new venture. I loved speaking to this crowd.'

Around ten people made first-time commitments to Christ, with many more motivated to live a more passionate and positive Christian life.
