Strengthen My Hands

26 April 2024

Nehemiah 6:9 '[Our enemies] were all trying to frighten us, thinking, "Their hands will get too weak for the work, and it will not be completed." "Now strengthen my hands."' (NIV)

When we step out to achieve something great for God, we will face opposition. Sometimes the opposition will come from other people, but it will always be supported and motivated, in part at least, by the enemy of our souls. Enemies come to threaten and harass you. They try to steal your resolve, your determination to see the job through to the end. Your focus and vision will threaten them. Your desire to honour God's name will seem strange to them. When the pressure is at its worst, you need to do as Nehemiah did: pray, 'Lord, strengthen my hands.' Nehemiah didn't ask for strength in his feet; he wasn't looking for help to run. He wanted help to keep on with the work. Don't ask God to remove the opposition. Not before you've prayed that he would use turn the situation around so that it will work for your good. Don't ask him first to give you a way of escape. Ask him to give you the power, the energy, the fortitude to look the problem in the eye and say, 'I'm going to finish this job no matter what!' In the end, you will look back and know that you've grabbed your God-given opportunities with both hands. You'll celebrate because you didn't let frustration, disappointment or fear dictate the terms to you.

Prayer: 'Lord, strengthen my hands so that I keep on working for you, even when the pressure against me is at its worst. I want to finish the job you've given me to do, and prove your strength is bigger than the pressure around me.'
