The Perishable vs The Imperishable

26 April 2024

1 Peter 1:18 'For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.'

Money is a very important thing. There's not much you can achieve without it. The Bible tells us many times how God wants to bless people who place their trust in him and part of that blessing is the provision of our natural needs. God wants to give us, through Jesus, everything we need to achieve his will for our lives -- including material provision. But we need to keep money in its rightful place in our lives -- it is a great servant but a very poor master. After all, Peter reminds us, it wasn't money that saved us. Money in perishable, but our salvation is not because it was purchased with the very life of Jesus. In this life, we constantly need to make the perishable serve the imperishable. It's sad to watch so many people around us everyday living as if their quality of life rests simply on what they own. For a Christian, a quality life is one that rests on the person and presence of Jesus. That kind of life cannot be stolen, eaten away, spent or misplaced.

Prayer: Jesus, help me today to live for more than just material possessions. Thank you for your generous provision in my life. Help me, though, not to build my life on perishable things like money and what it can buy.'
