A Shadow Of What Was To Come

27 April 2024

1 Peter 1:12 (New Living Translation). '[The prophets of old] were told that these things would not happen during their lifetime, but many years later, during yours. And now this Good News has been announced by those who preached to you in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.'

Wow -- just think about this for a moment! Have you ever read about the Old Testament prophets and thought, 'Man, what incredible faith these people had!' We read their exploits and marvel at their insight and their boldness. Yet, for all their greatness in God, there was always something missing in their lives, and they knew it. Every one of them looked wistfully forward to a promise they would never see fulfilled in their own time -- the promise of salvation. They knew that, for all their works of faith and righteousness, they could not be assured of being right with God once-and-for-all. Though they longed to be free of their slavery to a fallen sinful nature, they would need to keep coming to God with sacrifices of bulls and goats. Even that was not a final solution to the problem of sin; it was only a stop-gap and a shadow of what was to come. The promise of salvation through the blood of God's Son is something even the angels themselves can only wonder at! Yet, we can experience its power every day, in a thousand different ways: in the forgiveness of our sins, the healing of our bodies, the repairing of broken relationships and much more. It's not something we should take for granted, this salvation of ours. It's something we should make the most of everyday.

Prayer: 'Thank you Lord for saving me. Thank you for forgiving of all my sins. Help me to reach out and take hold of everything you died to give me.'
